My favorite chapter in the Silmarillion is Akallabeth. I love the story of the Numenoreans, about how the Edain were rewarded for fighting on the side of good, and then sadly lost everything because of their greed and blasphemy. Then out of the ruin the Elendili come to Middle-Earth as a high race of men; stronger, smarter and longer-lived than normal men.
"We who bear the ever-mounting burden of the years do not clearly understand this...". Akallabeth
My favorite line; the Numenoreans want the life of the eldar, and the elves want the doom of man.
Anybody else???

To me, the story of Hurin has always stood as something special, especially his self-sacrifice towards saving Turgon and of course his famous "last stand", not to mention his suffering in seeing the doom of his family unfold, but that's another great chapter...
